I stand upon the old unstable wood planks responsible for keeping me from falling out of this very tall tree. The morning air is slightly chilly and I shiver. The view from here is beautiful, the tips of the mountains are hidden behind clouds. The view has never disappointed me. Its one of the few things that never disappointed me.
At the moment of my parent’s “accidental” death I was betrayed by all those I thought I could trust. It was a very bad day. Well, a very bad week considering being kidnapped, sold into slavery, and my first murder at the age of 14. It all sounds very bad out of context, but the guys had it coming. There’s no use crying about it, I wasn’t going to be carted around and sold like some animal.
Most people here at the rebellion camp call me their queen. But as for the 11 original rebels, the ones who founded this place, they have a nickname for me. They call me a little monster. Though I think it’s a little outdated considering I am 17 now.
The nickname was created because of how I arrived at camp. I had been running and wandering through the forest for about a month before I finally came upon the camp. So reasonably I was a bit scared and feral. I was covered in blood, guts, dirt, and plants. I scared the crap out of Gophry and his wife Elena. They thought they were about to die at the hands of a monster till they realized there was a girl under there. Since then they have raised me like I’m their own child and since Gophry is the founder and leader of the camp that technically makes him king which makes me a princess. A dang princess? Ya no.
I tried to get them to stop and see me as just another regular old rebel, but they don’t and Gophry says to let them. He says that all of them have been raised and taught that every civilization needs a leader. A king to help keep them safe and to give them hope. Since we can’t possibly have them go back to being under the power of the wretched King Faller we have to step up. Or I at least have to stop trying to be regular in their eyes.
I remember he told me that when the war is over, and they finally overthrow the King he will step up and take the throne till they can find a better replacement. I asked him why not just stay as king. The people love him, and he is just with a kind heart. He told me that he did not want to be the king and that there was probably someone out there more capable. Elena is a soft-hearted submissive woman who would not be happy or fully capable of being a queen and he would not put that on her. He explained in detail his plan to move with Elena and get some farmland and live peacefully. He told me I would be welcome to join them. But I am uncomfortable with peace. I have not had it in a long time, and I believe I would be unsure what to do with it. I would probably go bored out of my mind. Plus, I know that Gophry and Elena have been wanting to try and have lots of kids and I know they will once they have peace. I don’t want to worm my way into there happiness. I feel like they deserve a restart. A new beginning probably without me. I mean its only right after everything they have done for me.
I gasp a signal for John to climb up and look at this. He does so clumsily but does so none the less. Which is impressive considering his big bulky size. He crouches next to me and I point to the massive army that is forming around the castle. Good! They got the kingdom locked up. Exactly where we want them. They will be so busy protecting the outside they won't even think about anybody in the inside. Plus, it leaves a lot fewer guards protecting the royal family. I stick my hand in the air and make the sign to launch our plan into action. Hopefully, they saw my hand. I watch the sun glisten off the castle walls waiting for my move. Were headed straight for the castle.
Dolly
“Daddy?” I say timidly. He doesn’t even look over at me as he places himself confidently in his giant throne.
“I have no time for your ignorance! Sit on the steps by me like your brother. I don’t want to hear a single peep from you!” He yells bashing his fists against his throne. I jump and scurry over and sit next to my brother. He looks like has already had too much to drink and too many of those sickly plant herb things he and the lords smoke. I try to keep from pinching my nose as I would probably get the back of mother’s hand across my face again. But the smell is horrible, and we are probably going to die anyway. Hopefully, death will offer me release from the torturous murderous grasp of my family.
For being seen as the most perfect family. The Royals. They have no idea what happens between our closed doors. And even those who “see” through my father and realize his evilness have no idea the reality of it. I see things that nobody else sees. Mother walks in the room and the sun hits all her shiny accessories. I wince blinded by her jewelry.
Brother turns to me and I meet his gaze. “Won't you be a good sister and sit farther away from me. Your perfume is giving me a headache.” He says scrunching his eyebrows. I scoot down and jump a little hearing the shouts, bangs, and gunfire from the war outside. “Were you in a rush getting here sister?” He asks. I look over at him confused.

“We all were. There is an attack just outside brother.” I say. He shrugs. “Just thought you should know that your makeup on your neck has rubbed off. If we do indeed have uninvited guest show up despite our guards your reputation will be ruined.”
I wince rubbing my neck. Most people would be unable to move or talk after being strangled nearly to death over and over. But I am now accustomed to the pain to the damage that gets renewed before it can even heal most times. It is a good thing the most talented healers are required to work at the castle or might have been mute by now. But of course, that’s what father wants. A mute princess can’t talk back. He thinks it would make me even more valuable to the princes of neighboring lands. I wince now feeling the pain not only in my neck but also on my back were my scars from lashes are.
“What reputation?” I ask while cursing him for bringing my attention to my pain.

“Well people say you are the most beautiful princess in the land. Your wavy red hair and green eyes are apparently very attractive to men. Though if they saw your scars and bruises, they would probably think otherwise. That’s actually probably why father hasn’t married you off yet. Not only would he lose his punching bag but the Princes or even Lords might be offended by the offer of damaged goods.” He says chuckling boldly. Well, maybe that’s good luck then. I don’t want to marry a prince or lord anyways. All of them are incapable of compassion and loving anyone other than themselves.
“Quiet daughter!” Father yells. “I have had enough of your nonsense!” I nod at my father. I wasn’t even speaking.
“Dolly sit up straight now! I won't have any slouching!" Mother yells at me looking deranged.

“Dolly sit up straight now! I won't have any slouching!" Mother yells at me looking deranged.
"Go back to being plastic!” Brother snickers. I sit up straight and place my hands on my lap. I smile a fake smile making my face and teeth hurt as though I bit into something overly sweet. I watch my mom turn to the side when father is not looking. She pulls out a flask. I watch as she drinks before closing it and hiding it in the folds of her dress. Loud banging on the door makes me jump losing my facade.
“Places get in your places!” She yells not at the guards but at us too. I watch the door and it cracks and wheezes under the force of whatever is on the other side of the door. With a bang, it flings open shards of wood flying everywhere.
When the it clears I stare at the girl in the middle. Her blonde nearly white hair is loose and flowing at her waist. Her skin is slightly tanned and her position is rigid with anger and determination. Her blue eyes stare passed the guards passed me to the king as the dust settles.
Addy
I stare at the king. The blood-red crown resting on his black hair. His eyes seemed as black as his hair. His lips lifted into a sneer. “What are you doing in my palace child?” He asks me mockingly.
I glare at him. “I am here to remove the infection from this place,” I say my voice loud and powerful. He leans forwards and the guards in front of us move uneasily. “Are you calling us an infection? You should probably keep your pretty mouth shut.”
I smile. “I am not the one who should keep their mouths shut,” I say stepping forwards. One of the guard’s rushes forwards. Jake slams him down and tells him that if he moves, he will kill him.
“Your begging for a fist around your throat. Children need to learn their place.” He says menacingly.
My insides twist with disgust. Is that his signature. Choking people to death. I clench my teeth and smirk. “My neck is open wide,” I say stepping forwards again this time with a mocking bow. That’s when I see her sitting on the steps to the right of the king. Her curly red hair is half up half down her green eyes watching me eagerly. I blink. The blood lust painted in her eyes does not disappear. My eyes travel to her neck. On her pale skin are hand and finger marks. Bruises looking so painful I nearly wince for her.
The king follows my gaze. “Yes. Only you will look worse when I am done with you.” He says laughing like I have admitted defeat. He thinks he has unnerved me. Well, he is wrong. Anger rises in me seeing the princess’s neck. I snap and the boys take down the guards. The kings gaze momentarily glazes with fear.
“Who are you to defy me he yells stepping of his throne. Dispose of them for me son!” He yells. The prince moves. I can tell by the way he moves that he is in no shape to fight. He is drugged and drunk. I easily dog his attack and send him sprawling to the ground where he stays snoring. I smirk and the king's face goes red.
“You can’t do this to me!” He yells. A gunshot goes off and I stare at the boys to see if they shot.
“Of course, they can Faller!” The queen yells. She is standing and in her hand is a gold-plated gun. The king lays bleeding on the ground. Dead. Before I can react, she points the gun at the prince and shoots, it hits him in the head. She turns to shoot the princess and I look over. The princess reacted before any of us running into the corridor to the side. I run towards the queen and lunge for the gun but it's too late. She points the gun up and shoots herself in the head.
I look at the bloody mess before me. If this is what the royal family was like, then they were even less perfect than everybody thought. No wonder the princess had such keen reflexes. The princess! “Stay here and wait for the others. Except for Fin. Fin you go tell them that their king is dead take his head if you need to. They should stop fighting then.” I say before running into the corridor were the princess disappeared.
Dolly
I run down the corridor. Not because I am sad about what happened but because I am afraid of what will happen to me. There’s no use crying about it. Will they blame me for all my father’s evil? For all his infection? I hear a voice yell after me.
“Princess! Princess stop!” I keep running. A maid exits the room to my left and I run straight into her before I have time to move. I crash to the ground hard and I hear the ripping of my dress. I look down and see crimson blood running down my arm. I hear the footsteps come around the corner and I look up at the girl from the throne room. She sits beside me and grabs some cloth the maid dropped. She wraps the cloth around my arm and secures it.
“Thank you,” I say. She nods. “Of course. I am sorry about your mother we tried to stop her.” I shake my head.
“Don’t feel sorry for her. She got what she deserved. She was a coward in life so why not a coward in death too.” I say.
“I wasn’t saying it for her. No one should have to see that.” She says standing up. She looks down at me her blue eyes soft but strong. She offers me her hand and I take it. I feel safe with her. Safer than I have ever felt in my whole entire existence.
